Whew! It was a nail biter there for a sec. In the 16 years that they have held this candy cane run, there has never been snow... until today.
There was a chance. But after last night, they changed it to nil. And, as predicted... They were wrong.
Light snow at first... then a little more. We hung out in the warm Silver Bullet Subaru for a bit until Cheryl started to have second thoughts about her footwear. Looks like the Super Fly were not going this one. The light dusting of snow was just enough to keep the tread less shoes from gripping. Cheryl whipped out her Ice Cleats and hoped for the best.
There was a warm-up area in the Chalet, near the Trap/skeet range. We noted the people who were gunning for the "best Outfit" contest. Cheryl had bough her Santa Suit just for that reason. (And to be "festive" during the run.)
One look at some of the competition and we knew that she was out of the running. And wouldn't you know it.... The Grinch won it.
Finally, with the temps down around 16 degrees, the race started. The 10K and the 5K runners were lumped together. Basically, the 10K-ers had to do 2 loops and the 5K-ers only one. Meaning, the 5K-ers were going to get in the way... again.
But hey! It is all just for fun after all. Cheryl ran by at the 5K mark and I could tell she was running with a bit of caution. Probably for the best, after all. Even with the Ice Gripper shoes, there is a chance of slipping.
In the final lap, Cheryl met up with a wall of 5K-ers walking towards the finish line. I snapped as many pics as I could, but she was hidden behind three 5K ladies walking it in. Cheryl places 14 overall and won her age group award!
Even though her time was not that great, apparently, the snowy conditions hit everyone else the same way. She actually was the 4th overall female finisher! Had those 5K-ers not been in the way, she might have been able to overtake the #3 top female finisher! Ah, the agony.
But she did get a Medal, and an award/medal to attach to her finishers medal. Not to shabby. There were other finisher's medals for this run. There was a Train that lit up when you pushed the button.
And there was a Christmas Tree that also lit up. Both of them had small bells attached to the main medal. ( Polar Express, Maybe?) But Cheryl got the Snow Globe. I would have liked the ones that lit up... never seen one like that before. But Cheryl was more than happy with her Snow Globe. ( another unique finisher's medal...) And since it was her's, I could not talk her into trading it for one of the other ones.
And then the real adventure started! The snow was really picking up on the highway. On days like that, I'm happy we drive the Subaru. Even so, there is a "risk" factor where anything can happen. You might have good control and traction, but that does not mean other drivers will not screw things up and take you out with them.
Thankfully, the Snow trickled off just before Des Moines. I'm not sure if the snow will follow us all the way to Wellman, But I will be very happy if it does not. The Colder temps are bad enough. And if Cheryl wants to run tomorrow, well... Ice on the trail will not be very fun for running or biking.
So... back home now. Warm and toasty. Might even make myself a Hot Chocolate. We always eat a bunch of junk food when we do these runs. Especially if the travel times exceed 3 hours! Once the Holidays are over, I will have to get back on track. Maybe even start before the season is finished. Looks like around 30 stockings for tomorrow, so that will most likely take the remainder of the day to complete. Time to relax and prep up for tomorrow. Thanks for stopping in,
