And The Winner Is Revealed!

The Loser discovered in January.
Remember back in January when I discovered a dead Whitetail Buck?   My theory at the time was that he was the loser in a life and death battle for the "Ladies" of the Coralville bike trail.  The question was, of course,  if this was the loser,  what does the Winner look like?

Evidence that the Winner Survived.
Well today,  half of that question was answered!

Check out these Tines!   Dangerous!
Behold!   A Shed from the dominant buck in the area!   Of course I'm making a few assumptions here.    It is possible that this is just one of the bucks that chose NOT to fight.   Perhaps there is a larger one out there.   But judging from the size of this huge spike on the brow tine,  I'm thinking this guy is a pretty good suspect for the crime.
The Corgi with his trophy.

Not very wide,  But those tall tines...

The Corgi is very proud.
The shed was discovered right next to the trail that we ran yesterday.   We might have missed it in the wind and rain...  But today,   there was a guy walking a Corgi and the dog was making a BIG DEAL out of the find.

Compare those to this guys... No wonder he lost.
I told the guy about the other one about 50 yards away in the tall grass.    We was not really a collector, but thought he would check them out.   Maybe he will be able to find a home for them.  At least the dog seemed happy about it.

I no longer collect sheds or antlers of any kind, but they still excite me when we find them.   I only wished I could have seen the large owner of this shed in the flesh.   Or better yet,  the epic battle that those two bucks must have had in that field.   Field and Stream might have been interested... Maybe.  (or it is just one of many battles in their extensive library....  Who knows?)

Hope everyone is having a pleasant day.   Currently,  it is cold and lightly snowing.   The cold is supposed to stay around for a while.   But if the snow can hold off,   we will at least be able to bike/run a bit during the week.  We shall see.
