Cold Front Rain and Mushrooms.

It has rained for the majority of the the last two days.  We finally have some nicer temps to enjoy.   Cheryl ran today and we spent the rest of the morning hunting Mushrooms.

It might have been a little early for them, having only one day to process all that moisture.  However, we did manage to find a couple clusters of Golden Oysters while on the Coralville trail.

This got us excited.  So we headed to the Coralville Dam to see if we could find any other Early Summer Mushrooms.  Mostly, it was an exploratory mission, as the dry weather was going to be a factor in the probability of finding anything on the ground.   Last year, the Smooth Chanterelle never made an appearance due to the dry weather in late Summer.   I figured it would be a day or two after the rain to make the normal Chanterelle come out.

But we were happily surprised to discover  a few Boletes had come up this early.  They must have been a day or so earlier than us, because they were already infested with bugs and the White Fungus that eats them. They were all pretty good size too, so it was a little disappointing to find them, only to not be able to harvest them.   Still,   It proves that they are out there and ready to pop up.

We also found a few Brittle Gills that had also been up a while.   They were rather dry, and these are the Crab Russula, so they are rather sharp in flavor.    But where there are Russulas, there will eventually be Lobsters!  And Cheryl is very excited about that.

Windy and cool.  The Sun is now out and heating things up nicely.   Time to kick back in the AC and enjoy my Coffee.   ( With Ice added, of course.) The Black Raspberries are also out now, so there are plenty of reasons to get out there and start foraging.   I really hope we can hit the Chanterelles like we did last year.   They are good in everything I have tried them in.  And finding them is better than an Easter Egg hunt.  Enjoy that cool weather sent down from Minnesota. ( If  you live in Iowa.)  We certainly appreciate it here.   Thanks for stopping in.

I have a strange mushroom growing next to my steps in the backyard. I am sure you would eat it. Iowa's taught their children not to eat any of them because they could be poison. I am glad you can enjoy them. I would like the lobster that you find to go with that red one.

We found those golden oysters while hiking last week, but didn't pick them. I did take a photo of them though so I could look them up. I've never seen them that color!
