Cheryl has been bugging me to carve her up a couple of Candle stands, threatening to buy some from the store if I don't get my act together. So tonight,
I worked on a couple. Prototypes really, as I had no definite designs in mind. I tried to stick with just chisels, however, I am not completely thrilled with the results. One is the time, they seem to take a long time to complete. The second is the rough look of them. I don't know if it is my chisels or my impatient, but getting into those little cracks is a pain! Oh! and the wonderful mini files
I bought at woodcraft did not help as much as I had hoped. The maple clogs the file rather quickly. So basically, I'm still working it out.
I gave up for the night after these two.
I didn't work on the tree carving tonight because it rained all day today again! perhaps tomorrow will be a little dryer

Never carved maple, yet, so can n't comment. You'll work it out.
Those stands are looking good and I hope that you get them done before some store bought invaders get in. As for those little wood files, I bought a set several years ago and just can't seem to get used to them. Always clogging up... if I can get them to work for me at all. I now use a variety of fingernail files that I buy in the ladies cosmetics section of Wal-Mart (don't tell anyone that)and find that those satisfy most of my intricate wood filing needs.
It's true! They do clog up way more than I thouhgt they would. and i do use the fingernail files/sandpaper on a stick. I think if I were asked for my honest opinion, they are about the same, except the fingernail files are disposable. I'm starting to think I'm an idiot for buying them.
